Progesterone is a hormone the ovaries make in the second half of the menstrual cycle, after ovulation. Levels change through perimenopause and are low after menopause. Micronized progesterone has the same chemical structure as the progesterone your body makes, which is different from progestins, synthetic compounds with a different structure.
Prescribers often order progesterone alongside an estrogen as part of a hormone therapy plan. It can be prepared as an oral capsule or as a topical, and the two behave differently in the body, which is one reason the choice of form belongs to your prescriber.
A prescriber may choose a compounded preparation for a strength they want to write, for a topical form, or for a capsule without ingredients a patient reacts to, such as the peanut oil in the commercially manufactured capsule. What is micronized progesterone?
Micronized progesterone is progesterone milled into very fine particles. It has the same chemical structure as the progesterone the ovaries make, which is why it is often described as bioidentical. It is the form we use for our progesterone capsules.
Is progesterone the same as a progestin?
No. Progestins are synthetic compounds that act on some of the same receptors but have a different chemical structure. Progesterone is the hormone itself. Which one belongs in your plan is a decision for your prescriber.
What forms of progesterone do you compound?
Oral capsules, including extended-release capsules, plus a hypoallergenic cream and an olive oil base topical. Each is made to order at the strength your prescriber writes.
Are your progesterone capsules made without peanut oil?
Yes. Our compounded progesterone capsules contain no peanut oil. The commercially manufactured micronized progesterone capsule is made with peanut oil, so a compounded capsule is an option when your prescriber orders progesterone and you have a peanut allergy. Dye-free and filler-free options are available too, and a pharmacist reviews every formulation before it is made.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. Progesterone is a prescription medication, so your prescriber decides whether it is right for you, which form to use and how often to use it. We do not prescribe; we prepare what your prescriber orders.
