Estriol is a weaker estrogen that the body makes in larger amounts during pregnancy. It is not available as a commercially manufactured product in the United States, so a prescription for estriol is prepared by a compounding pharmacy. DHEA is a precursor hormone made mainly by the adrenal glands.
Some prescribers want both in a single vaginal preparation, and compounding is how that combination is made. A vaginal cream is applied directly to the vaginal tissue, which is why it is described as local therapy, as opposed to systemic hormone therapy.
